Acids,Bases & Salt
Important Notes
On the basis of the chemical properties, all the compounds can be classified into three groups.
1 Acid
2 Bases
3 Salts
Indicators for testing acids and bases -
An indicator is a dye that changes color when it is put into an acid or a base. The Three common indicators to test for acids and bases are-Litmus, Methyl orange, and phenolphthalein.
Litmus - Litmus can be used in the form of litmus solution or in the form of litmus paper. It is of two types -Blue litmus & Red litmus.
1 An acid truss blue litmus to Red. (ABR)
2 A Base turns Red litmus to Blue. (BRB)
Litmus is a natural indicator. Methyl orange & Phenolphthalein are synthetic indicators.
Methyl orange - The natural color of methyl orange is orange.
1 Methyl orange indicator gives Red color in acid solution
2 Methyl orange indicator gives yellow color in basic solution
Strong acid- An acid that is completely ionized in water and thus produces a large amount of hydrogen ions is called a strong acid, nitric acid & hydrochloric acid are strong acids.
Weak acid- An acid that is particle ionized in water and produces is a small amount of hydrogen ions is called a weak acid.
carbonic acid - Sulphurous acid (H2so3) are be acid.
Bases-Bases are thus chemical Substances that have a bitter taste and change the color Red litmus to Blue.
Water Soluble bases Alkalis - A Base that is Salvi in water is called an Alkali. Ex-Naoh, KoH, (CaoH)², NH4OH or Mg(OH)² etc. Bases are of two types.
strong Bases - A Base that is completely in water and thus produces a large amount of Hydroxide (OH-) ions, is called a strong base. Ex- NaOH, KOH as string Bases.
Weak Base - A Base that is practically iodized in water and thus Produces an amount of hydroxide ions is called a weak base. EX - NaOH, Ca(OH)², and Mg(OH)² are weak bases.
